The rules of social media keep changing on you, you’re not imagining things. The digital landscape really is constantly shifting beneath our feet and understanding what’s happening can help you make smarter decisions about where to put your energy.

What’s Been Happening?

If you’ve been using social media to promote your business in the last 5 years, here’s something that won’t surprise you…. Between 2022 and now, the amount of traffic flowing from social media to websites has dropped by about 30%. That’s a huge shift.

Why? Well, platforms like Facebook, Instagram and X have been making it harder for people to click away from their apps and visit your website. Instead, they’ve been pushing video content that keeps people scrolling inside their world. Frankly it’s surprising it’s that little. But smart cookies worked out how to get around it by putting links in the comments and link in the bio services etc.

But I’m constantly surprised by how many people I talk to in my consults don’t realise that their posts aren’t getting seen because Facebook’s algorithm shows less of a business page’s posts that contain external links. This is simply because posts that lead to external sites result in a loss of ad revenue for Facebook.

That’s why short form video was all the rage. It was good for the social media platforms–lots of engagement, difficult to convert. They were pushing it hard so it was a good idea to experiment. But it didn’t pay off for everyone. Many businesses got lost in a sea of content, couldn’t get traction, or clickthrough and spent so much time, effort and money making content that got them nowhere. Lots of likes on a video doesn’t equate to sales or reputational boost – just ego.

But Something’s Changing

Here’s the interesting bit – and the reason I’m writing this today. Those same platforms are starting to open the gates again, just a crack.

X is testing ways to make it easier for people to click links while still being able to like and comment on posts. Instagram is apparently trying out clickable links directly in posts. These might sound like small changes, but they’re actually quite significant.

Why the Change of Heart?

So why reverse course on linking away after spending years doing the opposite?

Well, it all comes down to engagement being down. They need to overcome the double audience killer of Ad fatigue and user burnout.

  • Content creators are pushing back. The people who make content for these platforms need to be able to send their followers somewhere – to their online shops, their newsletters, their websites. If the platforms make that too hard, creators simply take their audiences elsewhere.
  • The endless scroll is getting old. Mindlessly swiping through short videos and suddenly it’s been an hour? No judgement. Platforms realise people are getting tired of this and they need to offer something different to keep us engaged.
  • They’re learning to track us better. This sounds creepy. Because it is. But when you click a link, platforms can now keep track of what you’re interested in even while you’re reading something off their site. That helps them show you more relevant content (and ads) when you come back.
  • Publishers and businesses matter. News sites, blogs, and business websites provide the variety and credibility that keeps social media interesting. Without them, everything’s too samey-same.
  • Money talks. When platforms saw how much money was flowing through “link in bio” tools like Linktree, they realised they were missing out. Letting people click through to buy things or sign up for services can actually be profitable for everyone.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re running a business and trying to figure out where to focus your online efforts, this shift is actually good news.

It means that sharing links to your website, your blog posts, or your online shop might start working better again. You’re not shouting into the void quite as much as you were a year ago.

But – and this is important – we’re not going back to the “good old days” of 2015 when Facebook would happily send floods of traffic to your website. This is more like a careful compromise. The platforms are letting people click away, but they’re doing it in ways that still keep them in control.

The Bottom Line

The social media world is finding a new balance. After years of locking everything down, platforms are realising that being too controlling doesn’t work. They need creators, they need businesses and they need variety to keep people interested.

For you, this means it’s worth putting thought into the links you share. Make them count. Don’t just post for the sake of posting – share things that genuinely help your audience, that take them somewhere valuable.

The ground is always shifting online, but right now, it’s shifting in a direction that might just work a bit better for small businesses like yours. And that’s something worth knowing about.

Want to chat about how these changes might affect your business specifically? That’s exactly the kind of conversation I love having. Get in touch and let’s figure it out together.

In the vast landscape of digital marketing, it’s easy to get caught in quicksand if you’re not careful. All Gen Xers know the fear of it. The panic of having to drag someone out as they sink further and further into the mire. While it’s never been as common as TV tropes suggest, these pitfalls can still suck your time and energy, leaving you feeling stuck and frustrated. At Help Me Net, we’ve seen businesses struggle with plenty of challenges in their online journey. Here’s our guide to help you navigate this treacherous terrain and build a solid online presence.

1. Ignoring Your Target Audience

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is not taking the time to understand their target audience. Your website should be a conversation, not a monologue. Before creating any marketing materials, it’s crucial to understand what your customers are looking for, how to address their issues and what will grab their attention. Know who it is you’re trying to sell to and the rest will come easily.

To determine what your audience truly wants:

  • Ask them directly
  • Listen to the questions they are asking to you, to your competitors, in online forums
  • Use Google’s suggested search feature to see what people are searching for
  • Explore platforms like Quora to see what questions people are asking about your industry or niche

Remember, your business, brand, website and social media should be built with your target audience in mind. Consider their needs, concerns, abilities, focus, and situation when designing the website and creating content.

2. Neglecting SEO

Content marketing without SEO is like bread without butter. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is essential for increasing your website’s visibility in search results. A solid SEO strategy should consider:

  • The products or services you sell
  • Your target audience
  • Keyword research
  • Competitor research
  • Content creation
  • On-page optimization
  • Link building
  • Analytics and reporting

Backlinks are still one of Google’s most important ranking factors. However, be cautious when pursuing backlinks, as low-quality links can lead to penalties from Google. Also don’t get bamboozled by the huge number of ‘SEO experts’ who will contact you out of the blue, now that you have a website.

3. Creating Poor Quality Content

High-quality content is essential for getting people to Know, Like, Trust and Buy from you.

The Pitfall:

  • Spending too much time on irrelevant content and chasing what you see in your feed
  • Not knowing what, why or how to engage your readers
  • Not understanding that your content can sell your products and services 24/7
  • Creating bland, boring and unhelpful content that may damage your reputation
  • Giving the job of content creation to someone who doesn’t really understand your business or your customers

The Solution:

  • Take time and care crafting your key messages
  • Show who you are, how you work, why you do what you do and how you’ve helped previous customers
  • Learn the basics of quality content creation and put some effort into really engaging with your audience
  • Set an intention for each piece of content you send into the world
  • Answer common concerns, reframe situations, provide solutions and How to articles
  • Really value the relationship with your audience. It’s the most cost-effective marketing you can do.
  • Be accessible – easily digested, easily shareable and easily actionable
  • Effective headlines are crucial for capturing attention

4. Overlooking Website Maintenance

Regular website maintenance ensures relevance, security, and functionality. Common mistakes include:

  • Doing nothing
  • Relying solely on hosting companies for backups
  • Neglecting disaster recovery plans
  • Attempting to handle everything yourself
  • Lacking expertise

If you aren’t keeping up what’s happening in the online world, I strongly suggest delegating maintenance tasks to experts, freeing up your time for other important aspects of your business. Help Me Net is here to help.

5. Failing to Promote Your Content

The distinction between content and content marketing lies in marketing. Before publishing, devise a promotional plan. Effective strategies include:

  • Social media marketing
  • Expert collaborations
  • Email outreach
  • Paid ads
  • SEO

Actively share your content across different channels to reach a wider audience.

6. Ignoring Analytics

It’s crucial to measure your marketing results to determine what’s working and what’s not. Establish clear targets for each piece of content and track your progress over time. Tools like Google Analytics can provide valuable insights into your website traffic, user behavior, and campaign performance.

7. Using a Shotgun Approach to Marketing

The digital marketing world moves fast and it’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends and techniques. But, using a shotgun approach—trying to do a little of everything all at once—can lead to scattered efforts and poor results.

The Pitfall:

  • Trying to be all over every social media platform
  • Jumping on every new marketing trend without strategy
  • Spreading resources too thin across multiple channels

The Solution:

  • Focus on quality over quantity
  • Develop a targeted strategy based on your audience and goals
  • Choose marketing channels that align with your business objectives
  • Master a few key strategies before expanding
  • Repeat what works and do it consistently. Practice is an underrated skill.

Remember, it’s better to excel in a few well-chosen areas than to be mediocre across many. Concentrate your efforts where they’ll have the most impact for your specific business and audience.

8. Misunderstanding the Role of Social Media

Many businesses fall into the trap of thinking that online marketing is all about being omnipresent on social media. While social media is a powerful tool, it’s just one part of a comprehensive digital marketing strategy.

The Pitfall:

  • Spending too much time on social media without clear objectives
  • Neglecting other important aspects of digital marketing
  • Becoming a slave to social media algorithms and trends

The Solution:

  • Use social media strategically to support your overall marketing goals
  • Set clear objectives for your social media presence
  • Choose platforms that align with your target audience and business type
  • Create a content calendar to manage your social media efforts efficiently
  • Use scheduling tools to maintain a consistent presence without constant attention
  • Measure the ROI of your social media efforts and adjust accordingly

Remember, the goal is to get social media to work for you, not the other way around. Use it as a tool to connect with your audience, build your brand, and drive traffic to your website, but don’t let it consume all your marketing efforts or resources.

It’s Rough Out There. You Need Support.

Online marketing gets a hell of a lot easier if you understand these common pitfalls. The web is full of people trying to sell you things you just don’t need, praying on your pain points – I’ve written a whole article about that here. Remember that, like anything, life online is an ongoing effort that requires constant learning, practice and adaptation to stay alive and thrive.

At Help Me Net, we’re committed to helping you avoid these quicksand traps and build a solid foundation for your online success. Whether you’re just starting your digital journey or looking to improve your existing online presence, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Let’s work together to create a digital strategy that takes you places.

Are you tired of competing on price and eager to showcase your true value?

In a field often crowded with basic service providers, how do you communicate to potential customers what sets you apart as an experienced professional?

This is something I know all too well. In the world of web design, it can feel like everyone and their dog is offering services. With drag-and-drop builders and templates galore, anyone can cobble together a basic website. But here’s the thing: there’s a world of difference between a site that’s merely “up and running” and one that truly works for your business. That’s where experience comes into play.

An experienced web designer brings more than just technical know-how to the table. We understand the nuances of user experience, the importance of SEO, the impact of load times on conversions, and how to create a design that not only looks great but also aligns with your business goals. We’ve weathered the storms of browser compatibility issues, navigated the choppy waters of responsive design, and know how to future-proof your site against the ever-changing digital landscape. While many can build a website, few can craft a digital experience that elevates your brand and drives your business forward.

So how do you differentiate yourself and demonstrate the unique value you bring? One of the most powerful tools at your disposal is your experience. Experience isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a testament to your journey, skills, and the lessons learned along the way. It shapes your approach to problem-solving and equips you with insights that can only come from real-world practice. Clients are often willing to pay a premium for someone who can deliver results and navigate challenges with confidence and expertise.

Many professionals struggle to justify higher prices, especially when competing against lower-cost options. The key lies in effectively showcasing your experience and expertise. By positioning yourself as a premium service provider, you can attract clients who recognize and appreciate the quality of your work.

Your website can play a crucial role in positioning yourself as a premium service provider and attracting clients who value quality over bargain-basement prices.

Show Off Your Superpowers

It’s time to toot your own horn (in a professional way, of course).

  1. Build a Killer Portfolio: Create a dedicated page on your website that shows off your best work. Think of it as your digital trophy case.
  2. Flaunt Your Credentials: Got certifications? Special training? Don’t hide them in a drawer. Create an “About Me” section that highlights your expertise.

Your Toolbox Matters

Let’s talk about the tools of your trade.

  1. Showcase Your Tech: Have a section on your site that shows off the fancy tools you use. It’s like saying, “Look at all these cool gadgets I know how to use!
  2. Explain the Magic: Write a blog post about how your tools help you work smarter and faster. It’s not bragging if it’s true!

It’s All About Value

Remember, you’re not just selling a service – you’re selling results.

  1. Time is Money: Use case studies to show how your experience saves clients time (and headaches).
  2. Quality Counts: Create a “Success Stories” section that showcases your best work and happiest clients.
  3. Problem Solver Extraordinaire: Share stories of how you’ve tackled tricky problems. It’s like your own superhero origin story!

Brand Yourself Like a Boss

Your brand is more than just a logo – it’s your professional identity.

  1. Look the Part: Make sure your website looks as polished as you are. First impressions count!
  2. Share Your Smarts: Start a blog or host webinars to show off your expertise. It’s like being the cool teacher everyone wants to learn from.

Package It Up

Don’t just offer services – offer solutions.

  1. Bundle Up: Create service packages that offer more value than your competitors. It’s like offering a three-course meal instead of just the main dish.
  2. Be a Guide: Show how you can be a partner in your clients’ success, not just a hired hand.

Network Like a Pro

Remember, it’s not just what you know, but who you know.

  1. Make Friends: Network with other professionals and showcase these relationships on your site. It’s like having a bunch of cool kids vouch for you.
  2. Team Up: Partner with other experts to offer comprehensive solutions. Two heads are better than one, right?

Wrap It Up

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to positioning yourself as a premium service provider. Remember, it’s not about being the cheapest option – it’s about being the best option.

What’s a Content Audit Anyway?

A content audit is simply a thorough review of all the content on your website. It’s like taking inventory of your digital closet. You’ll be looking at everything from blog posts to product pages, checking what’s working, what’s not, and what needs a bit of TLC. We’ve looked at spring cleaning your website before, but here we are focussing on the words and images on your site.

Why Bother with a Content Audit?

  1. Find the Hidden Gems: You might rediscover great content that’s been buried and forgotten.
  2. Spot the Dust Bunnies: Identify outdated or irrelevant content that needs updating or removing.
  3. SEO Boost: Uncover opportunities to improve your search engine rankings.
  4. Better User Experience: Make sure your visitors can easily find what they’re looking for.

How to Do a Content Audit (Without Losing Your Mind)

  1. Make a List: Start by listing all your content. Use a spreadsheet to keep track.
    • Are you a Summit Club member? We can create a Google spreadsheet of all your content for you.
  2. Set Your Goals: What do you want to achieve? More traffic? Better engagement? Define your objectives.
  3. Analyse Your Content: Look at things like traffic, engagement, and relevance.
  4. Identify Actions: Decide what needs updating, what can be combined, and what should be removed.
  5. Make a Plan: Prioritise your actions and set deadlines.

Pro Tips for a Successful Audit

  • Use Tools: Google Analytics and Google Search Console are your friends here.
  • Be Ruthless: If content isn’t serving a purpose, don’t be afraid to let it go.
  • Think Like Your Audience: What would they find useful and engaging?

The Help Me Net Approach

Is your website feeling a bit dusty?

Are cobwebs forming in the corners of your homepage?

Well, grab your feather duster and white sage – it’s time for a good old-fashioned spring clean! Don’t worry, we won’t make you move any heavy furniture.

Let’s dive into some easy ways to freshen up online.

1. Revisit Your Website’s Goals (AKA: What’s the Point?)

First things first, let’s have a little chat with your website. Ask it, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Okay, maybe not exactly that, but you get the idea. Make sure your site’s goals align with your current business objectives. If your website’s main goal is still to sell floppy disks, we might need to have a longer conversation.

2. Rethink the Navigation (Or: How to Stop Visitors from Getting Lost)

Is your website’s navigation more confusing than a corn maze? Time to simplify! Look at your primary navigation and ask yourself, “Would my grandmother be able to find the contact page?” If the answer is no, it’s time for a redesign. And don’t be shy – ask an outsider for their perspective. Sometimes we’re too close to see the forest for the trees (or the home page for the pop-ups).

3. Check Your Links and Forms (The “Is This Thing On?” Test)

Nothing says “Welcome to 2005!” quite like a broken link or a contact form that leads to nowhere. Click around your site like a caffeinated squirrel and make sure everything works. Your visitors will thank you for not sending them to the dreaded 404 page.

4. Do an Image Vacuum (No, Not That Kind of Vacuum)

Time to suck up all those unnecessary images! Are your visuals more random than a Jackson Pollock painting? Do your images take longer to load than it takes to watch “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy? It might be time for an image detox. Remember, quality over quantity!

5. Social Media Sweep (Show them where to get more!)

Are your social media buttons hiding like shy teenagers at a school dance? Bring them out of their shell! Make sure visitors can easily find and click on your social media links. But don’t go overboard – we don’t need to see your MySpace profile.

6. Update Those Testimonials (Show Off a Little!)

If your latest testimonial is from someone praising your “cutting-edge dial-up internet service,” it might be time for an update. Add some fresh, glowing reviews to your site. Don’t be afraid to add a date stamp – it shows you’re still in business and making customers happy!

7. Wipe Down Your Content (Dust Those Paragraphs!)

Got some pages that haven’t been touched since the Y2K scare? It’s time for a content refresh! Update or remove outdated information. Your “Hottest Trends of 2015” blog post probably isn’t doing you any favours anymore.

8. Check Out Your Analytics (Numbers Don’t Lie)

Grab your binoculars and dive into those analytics! Which pages are popular? Which ones are ghost towns? Use this info to guide your spring cleaning efforts. Maybe it’s time to expand on that surprisingly popular blog post about cat memes (no judgement here).

9. Fluff Up That Content (Make It Comfy for Visitors)

Is your blog looking a bit thin? Plump it up with some fresh, juicy content! Regular updates not only keep your visitors coming back, but they also make search engines happy. Win-win!

Remember, a little spring cleaning goes a long way in keeping your website fresh, functional, and fabulous.

And if all this cleaning talk has you breaking out in hives, don’t worry – that’s what professionals are for. We’re always here to help you make your digital home sparkle!

Now, go forth and clean! Your website (and your visitors) will thank you.

There are so many blogs, articles, and social media posts vying for attention, how do you create content that stands out?

The answer lies in understanding what your audience truly wants and delivering it in a way that works for them.

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, following a set of golden rules can help you craft content that not only attracts readers but also keeps them coming back for more.

Having written more online articles than a candy shop has hundreds and thousands, here are my golden rules to make the effort you put into content creation worthwhile.

Give the People What They Want (And Make It Juicy)

First things first, your content needs to serve a purpose. It’s like making a sandwich – nobody wants just two slices of bread! You’ve got to stuff it with the good stuff that your readers are craving.

  • Start with an intention – what do you want this piece of content to do
  • Know your ideal client like they’re your BFF
  • Write specifically for them
  • Do your keyword research (free tools like Ubersuggest and Google Trends are your pals here)
  • Make it thick and juicy – in-depth articles are the crowd-pleasers

Write for Your Reader, Not Your Ego

Remember, you’re not writing a love letter to yourself. Your content should be all about your reader.

  • Draft an outline to keep your thoughts organised
  • Focus on evergreen, comprehensive tutorials
  • Link to other valuable content (including your own)

Give Google What It Wants (But Don’t Be Creepy About It)

SEO is important, but don’t go overboard. It’s like seasoning your food – a little goes a long way.

  • Optimize for phrases, not single keywords
  • Include your target keyword(s) in your headline, page title, and URL slug
  • Keep your URLs short and sweet
  • One main keyword per page (don’t stuff ’em in like you’re playing keyword Tetris)

Make It Easy on the Eyes

Nobody likes a wall of text. Break it up!

  • Use unique page titles and meta descriptions
  • Optimize your images (filename, alt text, description)
  • Make your content scannable with headers, bullet points, and short paragraphs

Call to Action (CTA) – Make It Crystal Clear

Don’t leave your readers hanging. Tell them what to do next!

  • Use strong, clear CTAs
  • Guide them to your product pages or get them to subscribe

Promote, Promote, Promote

Writing great content is only half the battle. You’ve got to get it out there!

  • Link to your content in guest posts, press releases, interviews, etc.

The Golden Rule of All Golden Rules

Don’t steal content. Seriously. It’s not cool, and Google will put you in the naughty corner.

Remember

Creating great content is like cooking a gourmet meal. It takes time, effort, and a dash of creativity. But when you nail it, your readers (and Google) will keep coming back for seconds!

Good images make you look good!

They will enhance your content, make it more engaging and give people a real feel for who you are and what you do. Most importantly, photos give people a quick way to judge whether you are the right person for them. So choose wisely!

Navigating the world of digital images can be a bit tricky. From finding the right photos to understanding file formats and optimizing for web use, there’s a lot of things to keep in mind. SO let’s look at some practical tips for sourcing images, the different formats you might encounter, and how to optimize your visuals for better performance on your website. Let’s get started!

The Great Image Hunt

You’re writing a blog post, and suddenly you need the perfect image. Cue the stock photo safari:

  1. Write an amazing blog post (go you!)
  2. Realise it needs a snazzy image
  3. Dive into the rabbit hole of stock photo websites
  4. Spend way too long debating between slightly different photos of people pointing at computers
  5. Find the perfect image… that costs more than your monthly coffee budget
  6. Settle for a less-than-ideal but cheaper option
  7. Upload and pretend you’re totally happy with your choice

Sound familiar? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there!

First rule: You can not use random photos off the internet!

You can not use Google to find images that are owned by somebody else. Super no, no! Other people’s images are protected by copyright, and there are legal consequences for using them without proper licensing or attribution. It undermines the integrity of your website. And you could be fined thousands of dollars.

Use reputable stock image websites

There are free ones available. I love Death to Stock, MorgueFile and Unsplash. If you have a budget, then IStock or Deposit Photos are a goldmine.

Create your own

Stock photos may seem like an easy solution for filling visual gaps on your website, but investing in custom images pays off in the long run. They will enhance your credibility, create a relatable and unique brand identity and help you just stand out. So grab that camera or hire a professional photographer—your website will thank you!

Image Formats: A Quick and Dirty Guide

Let’s break down the most common image formats you’ll encounter online:

JPG (or JPEG)

  • The all-rounder of the internet
  • Great for photographs
  • Loses some quality each time you save (so don’t overdo it!)

PNG

  • The superhero of transparency
  • Perfect for logos and graphics with clear edges
  • Larger file size than JPG, but better quality

GIF

  • The king of memes and simple animations
  • Limited colours, but small file size
  • Great for quick, looping animations

WebP

  • The new kid on the block
  • Smaller file sizes with good quality
  • Not supported by all browsers (yet), but gaining ground

Making Your Images Web-Friendly

  1. Size Matters: Keep large, high-quality images between 60K and 100K. Smaller images should be 30K or less.
  2. Alt Text is Your Friend: Always use alt text to describe your images. It’s good for accessibility and SEO!
  3. Optimize, Optimize, Optimize: Use tools like Photoshop, GIMP, or online options like PicMonkey or Pixlr to shrink your file sizes without losing too much quality.

Speed is Key

Remember, most people will wait about 3 seconds for a website to load on desktop, and 5 seconds on mobile. Don’t let chunky images slow you down!

Pro Tip: Thumbnails

Make your thumbnail file sizes as small as possible. They’re just appetizers – save the main course for when people click through!

The Bottom Line

Choosing and optimizing images for your website doesn’t have to be a headache. With a little know-how and the right tools, you can have a visually stunning site that loads faster than you can say “cheese!”

Remember, the perfect image is out there – and now you know how to make it shine online. Happy image hunting, folks!

There’s a really simple way to boost your site’s performance and keep your visitors engaged. It’s called interlinking, and it’s like creating a superhighway between all the awesome content on your site.

What’s Interlinking All About?

Interlinking is simply connecting your pages and posts to each other. It’s like introducing your content at a party – “Hey, have you met my friend over here? You two have a lot in common!”

Why Should You Care?

  • Keep Visitors Around: By linking to other relevant content, you’re giving your readers more reasons to stick around.
  • Boost Your SEO: Search engines love internal links. They help crawlers understand your site structure better. Remember how we talked about SEO last month?
  • Highlight Your Best Stuff: Got some killer content that’s not getting enough love? Link to it!

How to Interlink Like a Pro

  • Be Natural: Don’t force it. Link where it makes sense and adds value for your readers.
  • Mix Up Your Anchor Text: That’s the clickable text in your link. Use a variety of relevant phrases.
  • Link Deep: Don’t just link to your homepage or main category pages. Dig deep into your content archive.
  • Think Like a User: Ask yourself, “What else might my reader want to know about this topic?”

Pro Tips for Interlinking Success

  • Go Back in Time: Don’t forget to update your older posts with links to newer, relevant content.
  • Use Your Categories: Link to other posts in the same category for a natural, topical connection.
  • Be Strategic: Place important links higher up in your content for more impact.

Remember, interlinking is all about creating a better experience for your readers while giving your SEO a little boost. It’s a win-win!

So, next time you’re writing a post, think about the cool content you’ve already created. Where can you drop in a helpful link? Your readers (and search engines) will thank you!
